Targeting Pain Points with Precise Project Definition

 

With the rapid growth of the new energy vehicle industry, lithium battery electrode slitting demands extremely high precision, wear resistance, and cut-edge quality from blades. Conventional blades tend to suffer from micro-chipping, coating peeling, and increased burr formation during use, directly affecting battery safety. After visiting multiple lithium battery production lines and collecting extensive real-world operating data, the R&D team at Mingbai Machinery Tool formally initiated a project at the early part of 2026, aiming to develop a new type of circular knife that combines ultra-high hardness with good toughness.

Multi-Layer Coating Technology Breakthrough

 

After hundreds of material composition trials and coating process optimizations, the R&D team finally settled on a technical route featuring a high-carbon micro-alloy tool steel substrate with a nano-multilayer composite coating. The substrate is processed using vacuum heat treatment plus cryogenic treatment, achieving a grain size grade of 12 or higher, striking an ideal balance between hardness and toughness. The coating is a PVD?deposited AlTiN+CrAlSiN multilayer structure, with a thickness controlled between 3-5μm, significantly reducing the friction coefficient. Test results show that the new blade achieves an edge hardness of 1100-HV, a 35% improvement over the company’s conventional products. After 20,000 consecutive simulated cutting cycles, the edge wear is only 0.8-μm, and the cut-edge burr height is below 5-μm, fully meeting the quality requirements of high-end lithium battery electrodes.

Positive Feedback from Application Validation

 

The new circular knife has been provided to three partner battery manufacturers for on-machine testing. Preliminary feedback indicates that blade life is approximately 20% longer than that of similar imported products, and the cutting process remains stable, with no edge curling or powder shedding on the electrode. One customer’s technical manager commented, “The performance of Mingbai’s new blade exceeds our expectations. We will prioritize it for our new production lines.” The company’s R&D director revealed that they will next develop a series of specialized blades for niche areas such as photovoltaic films and membrane electrodes for hydrogen fuel cells.
